Do I Really Look Like That?

The contemporary art gallery at Historic Northampton shows an artist each month who draws on local history or artifacts for inspiration. Enter Jenni Sussman, townie abstract painter and sculptor whose series Mask riffs on the faces and clothing of our sepia-toned ancestors seen in the daguerreotypes, tintypes and painted portraits within the collection. She is out to discover, in her words, “what is revealed and what is not” in those portraits, some of which span centuries. The results — like the two pieces in ink and acrylic shown here – are both free-flowing and stark: bright and surprising reflections of how we are introduced to art, and each other, head-on.

Jenni Sussman — Mask: Oct. 14-Nov. 6. Opening reception on Oct. 14, 5-8 p.m., as part of Arts Night Out. Free. Historic Northampton, 46 Bridge St., Northampton. (413) 584-6011, historic-northampton.org.
