Earlier this spring, Sobokeh moved from NYC to a little mountain town called Lyons in Colorado. Little did we know that we moved right into the heart of a Bluegrass mecca known as Planet Bluegrass, which hosts iconic bluegrass festivals such as RockyGrass every summer. This year’s 45th annual RockyGrass brought 5,000 people and some of the biggest names in bluegrass—including Sam Bush, Del McCoury BandThe Infamous Stringdusters, Peter Rowan, The Lil’ Smokies, and more—to our home.

At these festivals, the real stars of this show aren’t necessarily on stage. Many of the true stars of the festival are among the families playing in the St. Vrain River that runs through the festival grounds or the dancers twisting and twirling in the wide-open spaces and between the countless chairs and sunshades. With most attendees staking their claim with the famous “tarp run” each morning (the first 1,500 people to line up at 11 pm each night get a number that determines if they can place a tarp on the main field, and once doors open the next day, they run to grab the most desirable spot), the energy at this festival is one of relaxation and connection.

The following images were taken with the intention of capturing the true essence of this festival rather than the bright lights and big names on stage—at RockyGrass, the real headliners are the dancers, tubers, and tarp runners of the Front Range.
