Love Letter To A Record: Rojdar On Pitbull’s ‘Mr. Worldwide’

163

Many of us can link a certain album to pivotal moments in our lives. Whether it’s the first record you bought with your own money, the chord you first learnt to play on guitar, the song that soundtracked your first kiss, the album that got you those awkward and painful pubescent years or the one that set off light bulbs in your brain and inspired you to take a big leap of faith into the unknown – music is often the catalyst for change in our lives and can even help shape who we become.

In this series, Music Feeds asks artists to reflect on their relationship with music and share with us stories about the effect music has had on their lives.

Here are their love letters to records that forever changed their lives.

Rojdar – Pitbull’s Mr. Worlldwide

Dear Pitbull: Mr. Worldwide!

I’ll skip the awkward introduction and skip straight to the point. I love you…there I said it, now I hope this sets the vibe for the rest of this letter about me explaining how you made me the man I am today. Also for the remainder of this letter, is it cool if I call you Pit? Has a much better ring to it & people may actually think we are mates.

It was a cold winters night in 2009 & I was invited to my soccer mate’s 13th birthday. All week I was practicing my dance moves in my bedroom because I was told there was going to be a DJ & everyone would be partying. At this point of my 13-year life I was yet to kiss a girl & things weren’t looking so flash for yung Roj.

I arrived at the party at roughly 7:03pm because the party invite said 7pm & I didn’t want to be one of them plebs that arrived when the party began. I spent most of the first couple hours sitting on a rusty steel chair listing to the DJ play trance music which no one was really dancing to. But, you’ve got to experience the lowest of lows to appreciate the highest of highs, which you were about to give me….

Here is where everything changed…. The DJ played ‘Hotel Room Service’. Pit, you should have seen everyone including myself rush to the dance floor. About a minute in to the banger, I was approached by a girl friend and blurred the words “My friend wants to kiss you” …. took a few seconds to sink in that I may be getting my first kiss, but I had no time to waste. I approached xxx and we kissed. My days, it was everything a young boy with a pimple-riddled face could ask for, getting his first kiss to a Pitbull banger. The whole experience was over before the song was, if it wasn’t for them 3 minutes and 57 seconds I wouldn’t be the man I am today.

I want to thank you for producing the banger ‘Hotel Room Service’.

Also here are some other notable things you have also done that have inspired me to be a better person.

– Wrote the 2014 official FIFA World Cup Song

– Rhymed ‘Kodak’ with ‘Kodak’

– Graduated from college when all the odds were against you

Love You Pit!

Roj
