‘Saturday Night Fever’, ‘Chicago’ & ‘Waitress’ Musicals Coming To Sydney In 2019 & 2020

Sydney is set to host three more major musicals in 2019 and 2020, with ‘Saturday Night Fever’, ‘Chicago’ and ‘Waitress’ set to make their way down under.

‘Saturday Night Fever’ will open at the Capitol Theatre in 2019, while ‘Chicago’ will open at the Sydney Lyric Theatre in the same year. Broadway hit ‘Waitress’ will then open at the Lyric Theatre in 2020.

The New South Wales Government says it has managed to secure the productions exclusively for Sydney, and it expects to see over 60,000 visitors travel to Sydney for the shows, spending an estimated $28.8 million along the way.

Meanwhile, theatre producer John Frost says the three productions are some of his favourites.

“’Chicago’ is one of my favourite musicals of all time, with one of the best Kander and Ebb scores. I can’t wait to sit in the audition room to find Velma and Roxie for a new generation,” he says.

‘Waitress’ — inspired by the film of the same name — has already received four Tony nominations, and is in its third year on Broadway. It’s also the first musical in Broadway history to have four women in the four top creative team spots: a book by Jessie Nelson; a score by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles; choreography by Lorin Latarro and direction by Tony Award-winner Diane Paulus.

Show dates for the forthcoming Sydney productions of ‘Saturday Night Fever’, ‘Chicago’ and ‘Waitress’ are yet to be announced.
