On Friday night, September 14th, Pathway To Paris returned to San Francisco’s The Masonic for the fourth annual edition of the climate benefit. This year’s festivities included a diverse swath of talented artists including headliners Bob Weir and Patti Smith as well as Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Eric BurdonJim JamesKaren ODhani HarrisonLucinda Williams, and Talib Kweli.

For his six-song headlining set, Bob Weir was joined by legendary producer/bassist and Blue Note Records president Don Was as well as multi-instrumentalist Alex Koford, who’s been busy gigging with Weir’s former Grateful Dead bandmate, Phil Lesh, as part of his Terrapin Family Band. The trio, which featured Was on upright bass and Koford behind the drum kit, served as an appetizer for the upcoming inaugural tour by Bob Weir and Wolf Bros, the new trio comprised of Weir, Was, and drummer Jay Lane that’s hitting the road next month.

The set began with a rendition of the Dead’s “Loose Lucy”, followed by “Only A River” from Weir’s 2016 solo album, Blue Mountain and “Peggy-O”, the traditional folk song that was a mainstay on Grateful Dead setlists for years. Next, Weir welcomed Ramblin’ Jack Elliott to help them through a performance of “Friend of the Devil”. Finally, once Elliott left the stage, Weir, Was, and Koford finished out their slot with “The Other One” and “Touch of Grey”.

Pathway To Paris coincides with the Global Climate Action Summit, bringing together high-profile musicians, artists, activists, politicians, and other public figures to advocate for cities to work to address climate change. The event takes its name from the Paris Agreement, a global agreement secured by the U.N. that encourage countries to mitigate their greenhouse-gas emissions, and seeks to encourage cities to meet and exceed the Paris Agreement’s climate targets.
