Dickey Betts Hospitalized After Freak Accident

219

Just months after suffering a “mild stroke,” guitarist Dickey Betts has been hospitalized once again. The Allman Brothers Band co-founding guitarist suffered an accident at his home and will soon undergo brain surgery according to a report from the Herald-Tribune.

Dickey fell in the backyard of his home in Sarasota, Florida on Monday night while playing with his dog as per the report. Betts “cracked his head” which led to bleeding in his brain. The guitarist’s longtime manager, David Spero, told the Herald-Tribune’s Wade Tatangelo that Dickey is at a local hospital “in critical but stable condition.” Tatangelo’s report notes Betts will undergo surgery on Friday to relieve the swelling caused by the accident. “The family appreciates all of your thoughts and prayers during this very trying time,” Donna Betts said. “We are by his side giving him the strength to pull through this,” the guitarist’s wife added.

Betts returned to the stage in May following a multi-year retirement. His next shows were scheduled for November. “It was just a few days ago that Dickey was telling me how excited he was to get back in front of the fans on November 1,” Spero added to Tantangelo. “It is very unfortunate, for all involved, that we need to cancel those shows. Please add Dickey into your thoughts and prayers. I’ll keep everyone updated on his expected progress.” Our thoughts are with Dickey on a speedy recovery.
