Gov’t Mule returns to the scenic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado tomorrow night. Frontman Warren Haynes kicks off the marathon show with a solo performance, which will be followed by a set of Mule and a guest-filled Dark Side Of The Mule set. This week’s Throwback Thursday looks at the quartet’s most recent visit to Red Rocks.
Mule last played the famed venue on August 19, 2017. The Marcus King Band opened the evening ahead of sets from Yonder Mountain String Band and Gov’t Mule. Fans of The Allman Brothers Band were in for a number of treats over the course of the evening. Haynes sat-in with The Marcus King Band on “Dreams” before King returned the favor at the end of Gov’t Mule’s set for “Whipping Post.” Both “Dreams” and “Whipping Post” featured lots of fretboard fireworks from Marcus and Warren.
The night came to a close with a memorable collaboration. Gov’t Mule brought out Marcus King and Yonder’s Dave Johnston, Adam Aijala, Allie Kral and Jake Jolliff for a gorgeous rendition of the ABB classic “Melissa.” The ensemble followed the start of “Melissa” with a “Mountain Jam” excursion. Kral, Johnston, Jolliff and Johnston each took solos before King tore up “Mountain Jam.” Marcus and Warren connected on the main “Mountain Jam” theme — based on Donovan’s “There Is A Mountain” — which the group expertly used to lead back to “Melissa.” Marcus sang the end of “Melissa” and then Warren bid the crowd farewell.
