Tedeschi Trucks Band Welcomes Guests At 2017 Sunshine Music Festival In Boca Raton

205

The Tedeschi Trucks Band headlined each and every installment of the Sunshine Music Festival in Florida since their home state event started in 2013. Organizers of the multi-city event recently announced the Sunshine Music Festival is going on hiatus in 2019. The good news for music fans in Florida is that the TTB “has some special plans for St. Pete/Tampa Bay/Gulf Coast and South Florida fans for next year.” While we await word of just what the 12-piece band has in store, this week’s Full Show Friday features audio of the Tedeschi Trucks Band’s guest-filled performance from the 2017 Sunshine Music Festival’s stop at Mizner Park Amphitheatre in Boca Raton.

Sunshine Music Festival’s 2017 installment featured stops in St. Petersburg and Boca Raton. The lineup saw the TTB headline following performances from Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, Bruce Hornsby, Mavis Staples, Dave Mason, Railroad Earth, North Mississippi Allstars and Greyhounds. On Sunday, January 15 Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks led their band through a set that included guest appearances by Mason, Luther Dickinson of North Mississippi Allstars and old friend Oteil Burbridge.

The Tedeschi Trucks Band never shy away from performing other artists’ material, however their set and encore in Boca Raton were particularly heavy on covers. Four of the evening’s first six songs were originals but the TTB would only play one more of their own songs before ending the show. The set began with a standard “Anyhow” and a particularly fierce “Don’t Know What It Means” featuring growling guitar work from Trucks. Next came covers of Derek And The Dominos’ “Keep On Growing” and “Within You Without You” by The Beatles ahead of Let Me Get By standouts “Just As Strange” and “Crying Over You.”

Dave Mason was the first guest of the set. The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductee led the Tedeschi Trucks Band on his own “Feelin’ Alright,” which he originally recorded with Traffic. Mason’s appearance was followed by Luther Dickinson adding to “Leaving Trunk” and “Volunteered Slavery.” The TTB then covered Billy Taylor’s “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free” and Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “I Pity The Fool.”

After ending the set with their own “I Want More” and Santana’s “Soul Sacrifice,” Susan Tedeschi and Kofi Burbridge emerged to begin the encore with a tender rendition of Leon Russell’s “A Song For You.” The rest of the group then returned for Russell’s “Delta Lady.” Next came a cover of Joe Cocker’s “Space Captain” featuring Oteil Burbridge. The Dead & Company bassist is not only Kofi’s brother but is also a former member of Derek and Susan’s outfit. Finally, the Tedeschi Trucks Band brought the night to a close by emulating Cocker’s version of “With A Little Help From My Friends” by The Beatles.
