The String Cheese Incident Debuts Cake Cover & Welcomes Lyle Divinsky In Austin

156

On Saturday night The String Cheese Incident played their second of three scheduled sets at the jam-heavy Waterloo Music Festival at the Carson Creek Ranch in Austin, Texas. The Colorado-based band delivered a one-set show on the fest’s main stage that saw them welcome The Motet’s Lyle Divinsky, serve up a debut cover and dust off another during their encore.

The jamgrass stalwarts got their second night at Waterloo going with “Hi Ho No Show.” “Best Feeling,” a song written by their longtime friend Keller Williams, kicked off their first improv-heavy run of the night as they transitioned into “Song In My Head” and “Windy Mountain.” The six-piece act next welcomed Divinsky to the stage as they paired up on “Get To You.” The Motet vocalist appears on the studio version of the tune, with last night marking the fourth time this year that he’s collaborated with SCI on the song live. The band went with back to back new numbers with just the fifth ever take on “The Big Reveal” next.

Setlist staple “Joyful Sound” followed as the Outside Inside track segued into the instrumental “Rumble.” The biggest surprise of the night came next as String Cheese dropped in their debut take on Cake’s “Short Skirt/Long Jacket” in the middle of “Rosie.” Keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth sung lead on straight-ahead take on the ear-wormy track from the alt-rock act’s 2001 release Comfort Eagle that eventually segued back into “Rosie” to close out the set.

The String Cheese Incident brought their penultimate set of the fest to a close with a two-song encore. The band reached for “Shaking The Tree,” dusting off the tune that was originally released by Senegalese singer Youssou N’Dour and later recorded with new vocals from Peter Gabriel, for the first time since March of last year. Then, “Colorado Blue Sky” brought their evening to an end.
