Suwannee Hulaween returns to The Spirit Of The Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida October 26 – 28 featuring three nights of The String Cheese Incident plus performances from Jamiroquai, The Revivalists, Vulfpeck, STS9, Lettuce, Trampled By Turtles and dozens more. Each year SCI presents a special themed set and while details of the 2018 themed set are forthcoming, the band today revealed the costume theme is “Creatures Of The Galaxy.” This week’s Throwback Thursday looks at Cheese’s 2015 themed performance, “Ghoul Train.”
The first Suwannee Hulaween was held in 2013. SCI’s theme that year was “Voodoo.” In 2014 the band went with “The Afterlife” as the theme and followed 2015’s “Ghoul Train” set with a “Stringier Things” set in 2016. Last year’s theme was “Night Of The Loving Dead.”
Cheese’s “Ghoul Train” set was hosted by GZA and featured special guests the Antibalas Horns and vocalists Sheryl Renee and Leonard Julien. The set began with a focus on soul and dance music from the ’70s starting with The Commodores’ “Brick House.” Roller skaters paraded on stage during Cheryl Lynn’s “Got To Be Real,” which gave way to covers of Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September,” “Pick Up The Pieces” by Average White Band and “I’m Your Boogie Man” by KC & The Sunshine Band.
Go-go Girls and bubbles filled the stage as SCI presented covers of Rose Royce’s “Car Wash” by Rose Royce and Labelle’s “Lady Marmalade.” The String Cheese Incident then concluded the Ghoul Train set with late ’60s classics “Cold Sweat,” “I Want To Take You Higher” and “Dance To The Music.” Ghoul Train’s finale featured plenty of theatrics such as confetti cannons, pyro and a puppet train.
