Watch Bob Weir Make A Hilariously Awkward Cameo In A 1988 Safeway Commercial

231

Bob Weir has become an elder statesman of the jam scene. Weir has always been a storyteller, preferring to use setlists to take fans on an emotional journey and frequently slowing down numbers for more emphasis or feeling. Given the former Grateful Dead guitarist’s preference for storytelling, it’s unsurprising that he frequently performs and pens long folk songs—and that he has earned a reputation for occasionally forgetting a lyric or two, which many Deadheads have come to find endearing.

However, in 1988, major grocery store chain Safeway recruited Bob Weir for a commercial. Clearly, someone on the staff was worried that Bobby would forget his lines, as Weir, in monotone, reads off a teleprompter for the duration of the ad. Rushing through his lines without changing inflection or tone, Weir’s cameo is a truly and perfectly boring performance, with Bobby exhibiting approximately zero of the charismatic stage presence fans have come to love.

You can watch Weir’s awkward commercial cameo, which was meant to hype the supermarket’s charity drive to feed the hungry, below. Enjoy!
