Twenty-seven years ago today, the Grateful Dead descended on the Richfield Coliseum in Richfield, OH to kick off their 1991 fall tour. After a few weeks off the road, the band was eager to get back into action and delivered quite the memorable barn-burner for their fans at the Ohio performance.
Opening with “Let The Good Times Roll”, the Dead settled in with classics like “Jack Straw” and “Walkin’ Blues”. We’re fortunate, as a great video of the whole second set and encore has survived for us to enjoy. The set is a smoker from front to back, including a near-30-minute rendition of “Scarlet Begonias” > “Fire On The Mountain”. There’s also some great psychedelia in “Drums/Space”, and some uplifting energy in jams like “The Wheel” and “Not Fade Away”.
