Famed producer and musician Don Was presented a Don Was & Friends set on the Swan Stage at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass music festival in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park on Saturday afternoon. Don Was & Friends were joined by Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir for the final four songs of their performance. Weir, Was and drummer Jay Lane will soon head off on the inaugural Bob Weir & Wolf Bros Tour.
Was led a massive band that featured saxophonist Dave McMurray, trumpeter Terence Blanchard, guitarist Mike Moreno, drummers Terence Higgins and Kendrick Scott, percussionist Lenny Castro, keyboardist Chris Bowers and vocalists The McCrary Sisters, Frida Eugene, Harry Bowens and Sweet Pea Atkinson. Don’s time in Was (Not Was) was represented throughout the set including on the “Hello Operator” opener. Weir and guitarist Buddy Miller emerged halfway through the set for an unusual, horn-driven version of one of the final Garcia/Hunter masterpiece’s – “Days Between.” Bob fronted the group on “Days Between” and then stayed on stage to help out on a “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone” that contained Was (Not Was)’ “I Blew Up The United States” within as well as the “Walk The Dinosaur” finale.
