David Byrne Welcomes Merrill Garbus In Atlanta: Photos & Setlist

Former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne is nearing the end of the North American portion of his American Utopia Tour. On Tuesday night, the famed performer brought his massive band to the Fox Theater in Atlanta for a visually stunning concert. Byrne’s band for the run features drummers Mauro Refosco, Tim Keiper, Aaron Johnston, Gustavo Di Dalva, Davi Vieira and Daniel Freedman, backing vocalists Chris Giarmo and Tendayi Kuumba, bassist Bobby Wooten, guitarist Angie Swan and keyboardist Karl Mansfield. The 12-piece act put on a fully choreographed show “untethered” without any wires, amps, drum risers, platforms or monitors on stage. Byrne took an opportunity during the show to urge people to vote and shouted out HeadCount.

David Byrne has stuck to the same setlist for the most part since beginning the run in March. There’s a heaping helping of Talking Heads classics such as “I Zimbra,” “Slippery People,” “Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)” and “Burning Down The House” mixed with American Utopia gems including “I Dance Like This” and “Everybody’s Coming To My House” along with material from the rest of his solo career and various projects. tUnE-YaRdS opened the action and the group’s frontwoman Merrill Garbus joined Byrne & Co. for the emotional cover of Janelle Monae’s “Hell You Talmbout” that ended the evening.
