Eric Clapton Welcomes Gary Clark Jr. & Jimmie Vaughan At Madison Square Garden

170

Eric Clapton kicked off a two-night stand at Madison Square Garden on Saturday. The night featured opening sets from Gary Clark Jr. and Jimmy Vaughan who both returned to the stage to help the legendary guitarist close out the night.

The 73-year-old musician got his night underway with “Somebody’s Knocking,” the unreleased J.J. Cale tune that he recorded for his 2016 release I Still Do. Clapton would then stick to similar setlist from his recent now increasingly rare shows delivering a 13-song main set that mixed material from throughout his storied career along with a selection of blues covers. Last night saw takes on the likes of “Key To The Highway,” “I Shot The Sheriff,” “White Room,” “Layla” and “Cocaine.” Clapton’s encore featured both Clark Jr. and Vaughan with the ensemble of guitar players digging in on Joe Cocker’s “High Time We Went.” The extended take on the track from the British singer’s 1972 self-titled release was sung by Clapton’s keyboard Paul Carrack and featured solos from Clapton, Clark Jr., Vaughan and Doyle Bramhall II.
