Gov’t Mule Performs Black Sabbath’s ‘Paranoid’ In Its Entirety In Atlanta

164

When Gov’t Mule announced their fall tour, they revealed that they would be celebrating Halloween a little early this year with a show at The Tabernacle in Atlanta. The jam titans hinted strongly that their annual Mule-o-Ween show would see them covering the music of Black Sabbath with a graphic advertising the concert that used artwork similar to the heavy metal band’s 1970 LP Paranoid. On Saturday, Mule delivered on the promise during their two-set show that featured one traditional set, followed by another that saw them perform Sabbath’s sophomore album front to back.

Warren Haynes & Co. got their night going at the historic 2,600-capacity venue with “Stone Cold Rage.” From there, the band would work their way through a selection of familiar material. The meat of the set featured a jam-heavy sequence of old-school classics that saw them string together “Mule,” “Monkey Hill” and “Larger Than Life.” The four-piece would dedicate their entire second frame to celebrating the music of Black Sabbath by playing Paranoid in its entirety. Frequent cover “War Pigs” got things going, Mule would then reel off the record’s next seven tracks, all of which were live debuts. Highlights included by takes on the album’s title track along with “Iron Man,” “Electric Funeral” and “Fairies Wear Boots.”

The quartet would continue the theme during encore as they cherry-picked selections from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame act’s catalog. Bassist Jorgen Carlsson offered up a “Swede Leif Solo” before the band joined in for “Sweet Leaf.” Mule then served up back to back cuts from 1971 Master Of Reality with “Into The Void” and “Solitude.” The band closed out their night with “Snowblind” from Sabbath’s 1972 release Vol. 4.
