Happy Birthday John Prine: 2018 Live Collaborations

150

Acclaimed singer-songwriter John Prine turns 72 today. Earlier this year, the native of the Chicago suburb of Maywood, Illinois released The Tree Of Forgiveness, his first album of new material in 13 years. Last month, Prine was named Artist Of The Year at the Americana Music Honors & Awards for the second year in a row, cementing his late-career renaissance.

For the past two years, we’ve celebrated Prine’s birthday by presenting a series of collaborations the singer-songwriter has participated in. 2018 has once again seen Prine share the stage with a wide range of artists. Below, find five collaborations that took place earlier this year featuring the current Nashville resident and several talented musicians.

Prine’s headlining tour in support of The Tree Of Forgiveness yielded a number of collaborations with his opening acts on the run. At a stop in Cincinnati, Tyler Childers, who took home the Emerging Artist award at this year’s Americana Music Honors & Awards, dueted with Prine on the Sweet Revenge track “Please Don’t Bury Me.” Watch video captured by asiansplenda:

Kurt Vile, who opened for the legendary performer in Philadelphia, teamed with Prine on both “Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness” from German Afternoons and the beloved “Sam Stone.” Check out footage captured by KurtPolly505:

The former postman’s show at New York City’s famed Radio City Music Hall featured collaborations with Brandi Carlile and Sturgill Simpson. Carlile lent her talents for a four-song stretch in the middle of the show, which featured a take on Prine’s signature classic “Angel From Montgomery.” Simpson later sat-in for three tunes: “Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness,” “Please Don’t Bury Me” and “Pretty Good” from Prine’s self-titled debut album. Finally, over the last handful of years Prine and Margo Price have forged a strong friendship. The pair has shared the stage a number of times including this past summer at the Newport Folk Festival. Also, they collaborated on a pair of tunes during John’s intimate album release show at the Basement East in Nashville with “Unwed Fathers” from 1984’s Aimless Love among them.
