John Prine & Bill Murray Team Up For ‘Up Close And Personal’ Session In Nashville

Recent Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame nominee John Prine and legendary comedian Bill Murray sat down recently to discuss comedy, music, and their early days in Chicago. With Murray growing up in the Chicago suburb of Evanston and Prine growing up in nearby Maywood, the two entertainers have a lot in common, as both of their careers blossomed in the 1970s in the Windy City.

The pair sat down for a special Up Close And Personal session with the Recording Academy’s Nashville Chapter, diving into a multitude of different topics. Murray discusses how his career evolved through Chicago’s premier comedy club, Second City, before landing a spot on Saturday Night Live in the mid-1970s. Notes Murray, “I was so bad back then, I just walked out of the door, and kept walking to the South Side. I was a cake eater from the North who had no business aimlessly walking down there”.

The pair then digs into seminal musicians such as Steve Goodman, Leo Kottke, Kris Kristofferson, and more, with Prine stating, “There’s no one I would’ve rather been playing my songs for than Kris (Kristofferson). Him and Steve Goodman were probably two of the most unselfish people I’ve ever met.” Along with Prine doing some singing and picking, the two also discuss comedians John Belushi, Harold Ramis, and more.
