Melvin Seals & JGB Welcome Eddie Roberts, Ron Holloway & More In Ardmore

163

Melvin Seals & JGB continued their fall tour at The Ardmore Music Hall in Ardmore, Pennsylvania on Saturday night. The longtime Jerry Garcia Band organist and his band were joined by saxophonist Ron Holloway for the entire show and Eddie Roberts of The New Mastersounds and Swift Technique‘s Chelsea ViaCava for the second set. High-quality video of nearly the entire concert can be viewed below.

Seals, Holloway, guitarist Zach Nugent, bassist John-Paul McLean, drummer Peter Lavezzoli and vocalists Sunshine Becker and Lady Chi mixed staples from the Jerry Garcia Band repertoire such as “How Sweet It Is” and “That Lucky Old Sun” with rarer material including “That’s A Touch I Like” and “Johnny Too Bad” to form the first set. The evening’s opening frame also featured a take on the Grateful Dead classic “Eyes Of The World” and a discofied cover of the Motown gem “Dancing In The Streets.”

Melvin Seals & JGB’s lineup was aided by Roberts on guitar, ViaCava on vocals and Holloway on sax for a second set that began with blues standard “Stormy Monday” and Kris Kristofferson’s “Me & Bobby McGee.” The band and their guests then proceeded to work through covers of Bob Dylan’s “Gotta Serve Somebody,” Jimmy Cliff’s “The Harder They Come,” Garcia’s “Sugaree” and Smokey Robinson’s “I Second That Emotion.” Next came a rendition of The Meters’ “Hey Pocky Way” before the night came to a close with a run of “The Weight” and “Deal.” Videographer Chris Cafiero shared high-definition video featuring all but two songs from the concert.
