Neil Young Keeps The Rarities Coming In Philadelphia

129

Neil Young returned to the Tower Theater in Philadelphia on Monday night for his second of two solo shows at the venue. Young switched it up in a big way as he played 12 songs on the second night he didn’t perform on Sunday.

For the second night in a row the show started with a bust out. Young opened with the first “The Trip To Tulsa” since June 2, 1999. Next up was the return of Rust Never Sleeps’ “Thrasher” after more than two years. The performer then honored fellow Canadian Ian Tyson by performing “Four Strong Winds” for the first time since January 19, 2014. The 2018 debut of “Comes A Time” followed before Neil played “Lotta Love,” something he hadn’t done at a solo show in 15+ years.

The initial eight songs of the night featured Neil on acoustic guitar. He moved over to banjo for “Mellow My Mind” and electric on “Ohio.” From there, Young treated fans to a series of songs on piano including “Expecting To Fly.” Neil last performed the Buffalo Springfield deep cut way back on May 24, 2003. The piano portion of the evening also featured “Speakin’ Out,” “Tonight’s The Night,” “Horseshoe Man” and “Broken Arrow.” Next came a pump organ rendition of “Mother Earth (Natural Anthem)” ahead of the recently debuted “Children Of Destiny” with Young on electric guitar. The Ontario native also performed a song tentatively titled “Eternity” for just the third time ever. Last night’s main set concluded with “Out On The Weekend” and “Heart Of Gold” before Neil said farewell with a “Tumbleweed” encore. Watch fan-shot footage of “Heart Of Gold” captured by RB Kratz:
