On Friday evening, Railroad Earth had a difficult announcement for friends and fans, giving the sad news that the band’s longtime multi-instrumentalist Andy Goessling had passed away. Goessling was an integral member of the group since its inception, helping co-found the fan-favorite folk and bluegrass act and performing a number of instruments including acoustic and electric guitar, banjo, dobro, lap steel, mandolin, flute, pennywhistle, and saxophone.
This past weekend, Railroad Earth was scheduled for two headlining performances at Hillberry: The Harvest Moon Festival, which takes place on The Farm in Eureka Springs, AR. To honor their lost friend and band member, the group used the weekend to honor Goessling. Also on hand for the tribute was The Magpie Salute’s Matt Slocum, who was tapped to plays keys across the weekend, as well as friend and bluegrass royalty Sam Bush, who sat in on Sunday evening.
The band opened on Saturday with “Sing For Me” featuring lyrics penned by Hazel Dickens that were quoted in a statement RRE posted announcing Andy’s passing. Mandolinist John Skehan then stepped up to the mic and told the crowd they would play the last tune he had the privilege of playing with Goessling. Railroad Earth performed “Tabhair Dom Do Lámh”, a 17th century Irish instrumental written by Ruaidri Dáll Ó Catháin. The English translation of the title is “Give Me Your Hand.”
The group continued on with the classic “Long Way To Go” and went on to deliver a career-spanning mix of material through the rain and tears. RRE fit in a handful of covers including Tom Waits’ “Cold Water,” Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” and the Grateful Dead’s “Terrapin Station.” Guitarist Todd Sheaffer took a moment towards the end of the show to talk about the difficult few days the band had and to thank all of the fans for the love and support they’ve received.
Railroad Earth returned to the stage on Sunday for a show that saw them joined by Sam Bush for “Where Songs Begin” and “Fisherman’s Blues” to end the opening stanza. The group treated fans to plenty of staples such as “Head,” “Dandelion Wine,” “Lordy, Lordy”, and “The Hunting Song.”
