Umphrey’s McGee closed out a two-night stand at the Palace Theatre in St. Paul, Minnesota on Saturday night. The Chicago-based band delivered a long-lost cover and original during a wild segue-filled first set unearthing of “Masoka Tanga” and “Snake Juice.”
The impressive opening frame got going with the pairing of “Puppet String” > “2nd Self.” Things really got cooking next as the sextet would weave in and out of “Miss Tinkle’s Overture” and The Police’s “Masoka Tanga.” The Outlandos d’Amour track was dusted off for the first time since February 13, 2014 – a span of 459 shows. After a take on “Seasons,” Umphrey’s would close out their third set in the Twin Cities with another impressive seamless run that started with “The Fussy Dutchman.” “Push The Pig” followed as it worked its way into the second surprise of the night as Umphrey’s took “Snake Juice” off the shelf, performing it for just the 11th time ever and for the first time in 350 shows. The rarity then wound into “Conduit” to bring their penultimate set of the run to a close.
The six-piece would tease the Grateful Dead’s “Shakedown Street” before diving into “Remind Me” to start their second stanza. The it’s not us tune was followed by the one-two punch of “Miami Virtue” > “Mail Package.” Setlist staples “Dump City” and “Slacker” followed. Umphrey’s McGee then delivered their take on Van Halen’s “Panama” for just the seventh time since 2007 with a return to “Puppet String” putting a cap on the set. The band looked to “Dark Brush” to kick off their two-song encore. The tune, which was debuted earlier this year, was delivered for just the eighth time in its short history, with “Gulf Stream” wrapping up the band’s time in Minnesota.
