Ghost Light made a stop at Portland, ME’s Port City Music Hall last night, amidst their east coast fall tour. The newly formed project from Tom Hamilton, Holly Bowling, Raina Mullen, Scotty Zwang, and Steve Lyons is a force to be reckoned with, wowing audiences across the country with their next-level improvisations and already-stellar catalog of originals. With only 10 months as a band under their belts, Ghost Light impressively sold out multiple shows on their inaugural spring tour, based mostly off word-of-mouth buzz alone.
Ghost Light played a solid one set show in Portland, as the quintet opened up the night with “Don’t Come Apart Just Yet, My Dear”, before working through a cover of American Babies’ “An Epic Battle Between Light and Dark” into “Leave The Light On”. The band was showing off their comfortability as a unit, with Hamilton and Bowling firing off delicate improvisational licks back-and-forth.
The highlight of the evening came next, as Ghost Light debuted “Down on the Bottom”, a song penned by Bob Dylan and My Morning Jacket’s Jim James. Released in 2014, super producer T-Bone Burnett commissioned several high-profile artists to record music to recently discovered Bob Dylan lyrics from 1967’s Basement Tapes sessions, which went on to be released in 1975. Jim James, Elvis Costello, Mumford & Sons’ Marcus Mumford, Dawes’ Taylor Goldsmith, and Carolina Chocolate Drops’ Rhiannon Giddens are featured artists on Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes.
For the remainder of their show, Ghost Light intertwined a series of heavy-hitters, with “Lead Weight” seamlessly flowing into “Synth Driver”, before charging forward into a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “100 Years Ago”. The five-piece kept on truckin’ with “Afraid”, before bringing things back together with “Synth Driver” into “Lead Weight”. Ghost Light reprised their set opener for the encore, as Hamilton led the band through “Don’t Come Apart Just Yet, My Dear”.
Ghost Light continues their fall tour with a performance at New York City’s Brooklyn Bowl this Wednesday, November 21st. The band then heads south, stopping at Washington, D.C.’s The Hamilton ahead of shows in Richmond, VA; Raleigh, NC; Charlotte, NC; Charleston, SC; and Atlanta, GA, through to December 1st. Ghost Light will finish out their fall tour in the South, with performances at Nashville, Tennessee’s The Basement East (12/5); Lexington, Kentucky’s Cosmic Charlie’s (12/6); Cleveland, OH’s Beachland Ballroom and Tavern (12/7); and Ferndale, MI’s Otus Supply (12/8). To round out their announced plans for 2018, Ghost Light will play the highly anticipated Holidaze, before a two-night run at Phil Lesh’s Terrapin Crossroads on December 27th and 28th. Ghost Light will ring in the new year in support of The Disco Biscuits on December 31st, at Philadelphia’s Fillmore.
