Greensky Bluegrass Welcomes Nicki Bluhm In Austin

124

Michigan-based jamgrass act Greensky Bluegrass brought their fall tour to Stubb’s Waller Creek Amphitheater in Austin for an outdoor show on Friday night. The evening ended with an encore that saw the five-piece team with old friend Nicki Bluhm.

Greensky Bluegrass opened with fan-favorite “All Four” and then covered Dire Straits’ “Money For Nothing.” The band went on to pair their own “Hold On” with “Reuben’s Train” by The Dillards. Next came If Sorrows Swim standout “Forget Everything” along with a take on Ralph Stanley’s “Clinch Mountain Backstep.” A run of originals “Bottle Dry,” “Take Cover” and “Windshield” concluded the first set.

The quintet went with The New Basement Tapes’ gem “When I Get My Hands On You” to start the second set. Later came a cover of New Grass Revival’s “Can’t Stop Now” that includes teases and quotes from Phish’s “Down With Disease,” “Run Like An Antelope” and “Makisupa Policeman” as well as Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ “Breakdown.” The rest of frame featured a mix of beloved originals and choice covers such as Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” and “Pig In A Pen” by The Stanley Brothers. Greensky welcomed Nicki Bluhm to help sing the traditional “Will The Circle Be Unbroken?” as the evening’s encore. Watch partial video of “Can’t Stop Now” captured by Josh Timmermans:
