Happy Birthday Susan Tedeschi: Tedeschi Trucks Band Beacon Residency 2018 Audio

271

Acclaimed vocalist and guitarist Susan Tedeschi was born in Boston on this date in 1970. Tedeschi grew up and honed her talent in Boston and attended the Berklee College Of Music. Susan went on to embark on an illustrious career thanks to her powerful pipes and skills as a blues guitarist.

In 2001 Susan married fellow guitarist Derek Trucks and the pair have two children. Susan and Derek both led their own bands for a while before joining forces for the Soul Stew Revival in the late ’00s. Then, in 2010, they formed the Tedeschi Trucks Band and have focused on the project ever since. The Tedeschi Trucks Band started a tradition of performing residencies at the Beacon Theatre in New York City in 2011 and are expected to continue the trend through at least 2022.

This year’s Tedeschi Trucks Band residency at the New York City venue featured six shows spanning two weekends. In celebration of Susan’s birthday and for today’s Full Show Friday, listen to audience recordings of all six shows below. On October 5, the 12-piece act kicked off the run with their debut cover of “Sitting In Limbo” by Jimmy Cliff. The opening concert also featured guest appearances from Jimmy Herring and Doyle Bramhall II. Susan honored the late Aretha Franklin by leading the TTB through “I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)” on October 6. The second night of the run also featured the band’s first ever cover of Van Morrison’s “Call Me Up In Dreamland.” After a few nights off the run continued on October 9 with a concert that included one marathon set. Among the highlights was Tedeschi fronting the ensemble on the pairing of John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery” and the Grateful Dead’s “Sugaree.”

The Tedeschi Trucks Band’s October 10th performance at the Beacon was also structured as one long set. Night four of the run was heavy on originals including the rarity “In Every Heart” and “Shame,” which is expected to be on the group’s forthcoming studio album early next year. Then, on October 12, the TTB welcomed saxophonist Ravi Coltrane for a series of songs at the end of the first set as well as part of the encore. Another guest was in store for the finale as Warren Haynes sat-in for the bulk of the second set and the encore at the Beacon on October 13. Haynes added to “Preachin’ Blues,” “Done Somebody Wrong,” “I Walk On Guilded Splinters,” “I Want More,” “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed” and “With A Little Help From My Friends.” Check out all six setlists and recordings:
