Bob Weir and Wolf Bros brought their inaugural run to The Capitol Theatre on Friday for the first of a two-night stand. For the third time this week the three-piece welcomed a guest to join them. Last night Weir and drummer Jay Lane reunited with their former RatDog bandmate saxophonist Kenny Brooks. The horn player emerged early in the first set and would augment the act for the majority of the show.
The former Grateful Dead rhythm guitarist got things going at the historic rock palace with an unusual “Not Fade Away” opener. The Buddy Holly tune, which has traditionally served as show-closer segued straight into “Hell In A Bucket.” Brooks emerged next as the now four-piece dug in on a familiar tune for him “Ashes & Glass.” The track from Ratdog’s lone studio album wound its way into “Don’t Let Go” before returning back to the Evening Moods cut. Weir went with back to back cowboy tunes next offering up the Marty Robbins classic “El Paso” ahead of “Only A River” from Blue Mountain. Brooks helped the band close out the opening frame assisting on Willie Dixon’s “Little Red Rooster” and “Cassidy.”
Bob Weir & Wolf Bros with Brooks in tow looked to “Weather Report Suite” to open up the second set. The four-piece worked their way through the entire composition from Wake Of The Flood that concludes with “Let It Grow.” The quartet then got psychedelic as they offered up “Dark Star.” The jam-vehicle worked its way into The Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows” before making its way back for the second verse of “Dark Star.” Ratdog’s “Easy Answers” followed with Brooks turning the stage over the Weir, Lane and bassist Don Was next. The threesome closed out the stanza with the pairing of “New Speedway Boogie” > “Looks Like Rain” and “Going Down The Road Feeling Bad.” The horn player rejoined the band during the encore for a show-closing version of “Brokedown Palace.”
