‘Leonard Cohen: A Crack in Everything’ Exhibit Coming To New York & San Francisco In 2019

248

An exhibit celebrating the life and works of the late Leonard Cohen will arrive in the United States next spring. The Leonard Cohen: A Crack in Everything exhibit originally constructed and presented at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal in the beloved songwriter’s Canadian hometown will arrive at New York City’s Jewish Museum beginning on April 12th, 2019, and runs until September 8th, when it will then pack up and travel to Copenhagen and San Francisco through 2021. The interactive exhibition was notably curated by John Zeppetelli and Victor Shiffman when it opened at the MAC Montréal back in November 2017.

A Crack in Everything had been in the planning stages in the years prior to Cohen’s passing in November 2016. In addition to featuring video projections of Cohen’s drawings and commissioned works from international artists including Kara Blake and George Fok, the traveling exhibit also showcases what the Jewish Museum website is calling “an innovative multimedia gallery.” It is within the audio-based gallery where fans and inquiring visitors will be able to hear today’s contemporary artists covering material from Cohen’s music catalog, with contributions coming from Feist, Moby, The National with Sufjan Stevens and more.

The report goes on to state that the two-floor exhibit will also feature a 360-degree film comprised of 50 years worth of Cohen’s onstage moments, a video installation made up of fans performing songs which originally appeared on his 2005 I’m Your Man concert film, as well as an interactive organ set to play one of his poems in each melodic key.

Original reviews from the exhibit’s initial home in Montréal didn’t mince words when describing what included “dark room[s] of microphones, semi-nude dancer and other esoteric offerings.”

A Crack in Everything is scheduled to arrive at the Kunstforeningen GL STRAND and Nikolaj Kunsthal located in Copenhagen, Denmark starting on October 23rd, 2019 and running until February 16th, 2020. It will then return to the United States for its next home at San Francisco’s Contemporary Jewish Museum on October 20th, where it will remain until January 3rd, 2021.
