A trio of documentary films chronicling the lives of music legends including Miles Davis, David Crosby, and Leonard Cohen will see the light of day for the first time when they’re screened at the Sundance Film Festival early next year.
The popular film festival will premiere up to 111 feature films from 4,018 submissions when it returns to its snowy home in Park City, Utah from January 24th through February 3rd. The festival’s 2019 documentary selections also cover a range of non-music subjects including newscaster Mike Wallace and late actor Anton Yelchin.
Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool was directed by Stanley Nelson. Its title plays on the title of Davis’ 1957 compilation album of the same name. The film will reportedly include never-before-seen footage of the legendary jazz trumpet player in addition to studio outtakes from his recording sessions and interviews with Quincy Jones, Carlos Santana, Clive Davis, and many more.
“By unpacking [Davis’] upbringing, his methodology, his relationships, and his demons, we begin to understand the man who would redefine the original American musical genre,” Nelson said about his upcoming film, which was granted full access to the Miles Davis estate.
The Crosby documentary, David Crosby: Remember My Name, also references its subject’s own work, borrowing its title from the Counter-Culture era guitarist’s debut solo album from 1971. The film was directed by A.J. Eaton and produced by Cameron Crowe, who has reportedly conducted numerous interviews with Crosby for his part in the project. Crowe notably covered Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young back in 1976 when he was still just a writer for Rolling Stone.
As for the Leonard Cohen documentary, Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love will reportedly tell the story of the late Canadian songwriter and poet‘s relationship with his muse throughout the 1960s, Marianne Ihlen. The film was directed by Nick Broomfield, who has been at the helm of numerous rock docs throughout his career, including 2017’s Whitney: Can I Be Me, 2002’s Biggie and Tupac, and 1998’s Kurt & Courtney.
