Ween continued their fall run on Saturday at the Palace Theatre in St. Paul, Minnesota. The quintet once again kept their fans on their toes offering up a mini-acoustic set and reviving their cover of “Aces Of Spades” for the first time in a year.
The New Hope, Pennsylvania-based rockers got their night going at the historic 2,500-capacity venue with a string of classic Ween cuts offering up takes on the likes of “Nan,” “Take Me Away,” “Waving My Dick in the Wind” and “The Goin’ Gets Tough From The Getgo.” Ween went acoustic next, delivering a five-song run unplugged for the first time since September 1, 2017. The acoustic portion of the evening going with “Chocolate Town” and “Kim Smoltz.” Both tunes have been played almost exclusively that way since they were debuted. Fan-favorite “The Mollusk” followed, with “I Don’t Want It” finding its way into the setlist for the tenth time since 2011. “Joppa Road,” which had been sitting on the shelf since June 4, 2017, closed out the stretch.
From there Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo, Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman, bassist Dave Dreiwitz, keyboardist Glenn McClelland and drummer Claude Coleman Jr. would work their way through a mix of setlist staples and deeper cut tracks. The former was represented with the likes of “I’ll Be Your Jonny on the Spot,” “Exactly Where I’m At” and “Stroker Ace.” The latter saw the five-piece reach for “I Saw Gener Cryin’ in His Sleep,” which was played for just the 17th time since 1998. While “Transitions” from Shinola, Vol. 1 got its ninth-ever rendering. Ween also reached into their songbooks for rarities “Springtheme,” “The Stallion Pt. 5,” “Light Me Up,” “Demon Sweat” and “Fluffy.” When the band emerged for their encore they had one more surprise as they unearthed their take on “Ace Of Spades.” The Motorhead track was last played on Halloween 2017. “Poopship Destroyer” brought Ween’s night in St. Paul to a close.
