Aqueous and Mungion found themselves in Boulder, Colorado on Saturday, where the two emerging jam quartets provided fans at a packed Fox Theatre with a night of fantastic rock music. The performance was the latest stop on Aqueous’ lengthy fall tour in promotion of their 2018 concept albumColor Wheel.

The two bands have played together numerous times throughout the tour since it began back in late October, including a memorable Nicktoons-themed performance at New York City’s Knitting Factory back on Halloween. There were no costumes worn by either band on Saturday night, but both Aqueous and Mungion did provide their Bouder fans with some groovy rock jams over the course of their professionally-filmed sets.

Mungion had the first licks on Saturday, performing four songs over 45 minutes to get Fox Theatre up and dancing early on. The band started their set with “One Night Stan” before transitioning into “Herbert”, both of which appeared on their 2018 sophomore studio album, Ferris Wheel’s Day Off. The second half of their performance heard the Chicago-based outfit continue with a cover of The Talking Heads’ “Life During Wartime” before closing their set with “Beneath The Shallows”, the opening track from their 2016 debut album, Scary Blankets.

Aqueous took the stage for their first of two headlining sets beginning with fan-favorite “Strange Times”, one of the tracks from their 2012 Willie Is 40 LP. Set one continued with “Underlyer”, which transitioned right into another track from Willie Is 40 with “Warren in the Window”. Set one came to a close with guitarist Mike Gantzer taking the audience on a ride with “Skyway”, before the band continued into their maniacal cover of Oysterhead‘s “Pseudo Suicide”.

Aqueous returned for set two by once again revisiting Willie is 40—this time with the album’s opening song, “Origami”, which also included a mid-song tease of “20/20”. Another one of the band’s older originals, “Mosquito Valley, Pt 1”, came next before the band moved into yet another fan-favorite, “Kitty Chaser (Explosions)”. The second half of the set would go uninterrupted as the band seamlessly moved through a cover of Daryl Hall & John Oates‘ “I Can’t Go For That”, Color Wheel‘s “Split The Difference”, and a closing “Don’t Do It”. With time for one more song, Aqueous returned to the stage for an encore rendition of Ween‘s “How High Can You Fly”.

Fans who couldn’t make it to Boulder to catch the show can tune into the video below to watch the entire performance from Saturday.
