Dave Matthews Band Welcomes Preservation Hall Jazz Band In Charlottesville

118

On Friday, Dave Matthews Band brought their Fall Tour to Charlottesville for the first of a pair of homecoming gigs at the John Paul Jones Arena. The jam act offered up a career-spanning setlist that saw them joined by their opening act Preservation Hall Jazz Band at the midway point of the show.

The tour debut of “Big Eyed Fish” from 2002’s Busted Stuff got Dave Matthews & Co.’s evening going. The early part of the night featured takes on fan-favorites “Bartender,” “Satellite,” “#41” and “Everyday.” A pairing of their recently revived cover of Aerosmith’s “Sweet Emotion” and the old-school “Minarets” came ahead of the night’s sit-in. The members of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band emerged next as they assisted on a horn-fueled take on “That Girl Is You” from DMB’s latest studio effort Come Tomorrow.

The back half of the night was highlighted by Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” along with versions of “Don’t Drink The Water,” “Dancing Nancies” and “Grey Street.” Dave Matthews Band looked to the seasonally-appropriate “Christmas Song” and Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower” to bring their evening to a close.
