Jaco Pastorius was born on this date in 1951. Despite a career tragically cut short at the age of just 35, Pastorius is considered to be among the most talented bass players in the history of recorded music. That talent is on display in this edition of Saturday Stream that presents a career-spanning Spotify Playlist of the master bassist’s skillful work.

Pastorius is perhaps best-known for his tenure in the groundbreaking jazz-fusion group Weather Report, which he recorded and performed with between 1976 to 1981. Prior to that, Jaco worked with jazz guitarist Pat Metheny and issued his self-titled solo album Jaco Pastorius. The revered bassist went on to work with the likes of Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin, Tony Williams, Jimmy Cliff, Mike Stern and others who are featured within the playlist.

The playlist opens with “Happy Birthday To You” performed on this date in 1981 at a concert in Florida and concludes with selected tracks from the show. Explore the bass expertise possessed by the one and only Jaco Pastorius in the Spotify Playlist below:
