Hootie & The Blowfish Perform “I Only Wanna Be With You” On ‘The Tonight Show’ [Video]

On Monday morning, 1990s pop/rock favorites Hootie & The Blowfish announced their return to performing with a 25th-anniversary reunion tour alongside the Barenaked Ladies scheduled for summer 2019. By Monday evening, their music was blaring through television sets across the country, as the band served as the featured musical guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon where they performed their biggest career hit, “I Only Wanna Be With You”.

Jimmy Fallon, like anyone who was alive and rocking back in the 1990s, seemed to be more than ecstatic to welcome the band to his stage, and with good reason: Hootie & The Blowfish have not toured together since announcing their 10-year hiatus back in 2008 to make room for singer Darius Rucker‘s then-ambitious plans to launch what has since been a successful run as a solo country artist. Surely, anyone who grew up in the 1990s felt at least a little sense of nostalgic bliss as the band dove right into the opening chords of the 1994 hit single to start Monday night’s performance.

Overall, the band sounded great, as if they’ve spent the last decade touring together with new music and old hits. It’s as if the 1990s never ended and the much looser, pre-Internet days of their breakout decade were still going strong, if only within the walls of Jimmy Fallon‘s studio at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York. While fans know this not to be true, it’s somewhat warming to see and hear bands get back together and bring listeners back to a more simpler, distraction-free time in life—if even just for a few minutes through a television screen before bed.

Speaking of new music, the band also announced on Monday that they’re working on a currently-untitled sixth studio album to be released through Universal Music Group Nashville. The album would be their first since 2005’s Looking for Lucky. Although the project hasn’t been given any sort of release date, fans could be optimistic that some new Hootie & The Blowfish tunes could be ready for their live debut when the band heads out on their Group Therapy Tour starting May 30th in Virginia Beach.
