Netflix is continuing to provide fans with a seemingly endless list of programming that will only grow in the coming year. One of the new films scheduled to arrive on the streaming platform in 2019 should fill music and festival fans with a warmth of holiday delight, as Netflix announced on Monday that a documentary about the ill-fated Fyre Festival will arrive in January.
The forthcoming documentary, simply titled FYRE, looks to provide the first in-depth examination of what exactly happened on that nearly desolate island in The Bahamas back in the spring of 2017. As it’s been reported and joked about many times by now, Fyre Festival was branded as a total rich kid destination event that would take place over two weekends in April and May of that year. The documentary’s new trailer takes unlucky attendees and viewers back into one of music’s wildest failures with fan-shot videos and photos leading up to and during that fateful weekend.
Rapper and Fyre Festival investor Ja Rule is seen leading a toast and instructing those around him to “Party like rockstars!” as the trailer gets off to a hilarious start. The 20-second teaser continues with shots from the event’s misleading promo video before quickly turning to the on-site footage of what attendees actually arrived to—which was nothing but unorganized madness. Contrary to the event’s promotional materials, which promised lavish bungalow camping quarters and scheduled performances by Blink 182, Disclosure, Major Lazer, Lil Yachty, the event would be over before it began as attendees arrived to the island only to find wild animals, unfinished stage production and housing, and food that even the laziest of lunchtime chefs would scoff at.
The trailer comes to a fitting ending with event promoter-turned-convicted felon Billy McFarland standing above the crowd of stranded attendees, wind rustling his hair.
