New Kamasi Washington Film Inspired By ‘Heaven And Earth’ To Debut At Sundance Film Festival

110

Saxophonist extraordinaire Kamasi Washington has announced that he will debut a short film at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival.

As Kamasi explains in his announcement,

Over the last year, I have had the great fortune of working with an amazing team of directors on a film inspired by my album Heaven and Earth. We are so proud to announce that AS TOLD TO G/D THYSELF will premiere at Sundance in January!

The new film, entitled As Told To G/D Thyself, is inspired by Washington’s recent conceptual double album, Heaven and Earth, and is directed by a collective called the Ummah Chroma, which features Washington, Bradford Young (SelmaArrival), Terence Nance (“Random Acts of Flyness”), Jenn Nkiru (Beyoncé and JAY-Z’s “APESHIT” video), and Marc Thomas (Michael & Javier).

Early this summer, the contemporary jazz torch-bearer released his new double album, Heaven And Earth, marking his first release since his 2017 audiovisual concept EP Harmony of Difference and his first full-length effort since his aptly named 2015 effort, The Epic. On the new album, Washington pushes the boundaries of contemporary jazz and inserts African culture as the epicenter of the album’s character.
