Folk-rock guitarist and singer Steve Gunn has shared a new song, “Stonehurst Cowboy”, which is set to appear on his forthcoming studio album, The Unseen In Between. Paired with a live music video, “Stonehurst Cowboy” features Gunn performing solely by himself and his acoustic guitar.

As Gunn stated to go with the song’s debut through his Facebook page on Thursday, “Stonehurst Cowboy” is a musical tribute to his late father, who died just a few years ago back in 2016.

In “Stonehurst Cowboy”, Gunn finds no need to include any other musician or instrument to join him, as he’s seen wandering around London before pulling out his guitar to give a live rendition of the song right there on the street. The acoustic track never mentions his father by name, but Gunn makes sure to include some of the memories from when his father was still alive through the lyrics, including a time he stole his old man’s car and the fact that his dad was apparently a fantastic boxer, according to a statement shared from the singer and songwriter.

“According to [my dad], he was one of the toughest guys in his neighborhood. He would jokingly talk about how he had the fastest boxing hands back then, which became an ongoing joke in the family,” Gunn admitted to NPR on Thursday. “When I got a bit older, he told me some pretty wild stories of what happened to him back then … My father was a positive and hilarious force among his family and friends for the rest of his life. I miss him dearly.”

Gunn recently hosted a brief weekly residency at New York City’s Union Pool earlier this fall, where he tried out some of the new material in addition to inviting Sonic Youth‘s Lee Ronaldo to join him on stage during one the performances. Gunn is scheduled to head back out on the road in the new year with a run of North American and international tour dates scheduled for winter and spring 2019. Ticket information for Gunn’s upcoming shows can be found on his official website.

“Stonehurst Cowboy” follows the previously released “New Moon”, which arrived back in late October to go with the announcement of his upcoming album. Speaking of which, The Unseen In Between is currently scheduled to arrive on January 18th, 2019, via Matador Records, and can be pre-ordered here.
