Stuart Bogie Joins Hiss Golden Messenger In Brooklyn: Photos & Recap

On Tuesday, Hiss Golden Messenger brought their December tour to Brooklyn for a gig at the Music Hall Of Williamsburg. Last night marked the fourth year in a row the North Carolina-based band played a show in New York City around this time of the year, with M.C. Taylor officially anointing it as an annual tradition early in the evening. The Southern soul-infused, folk-rock act delivered a full “evening with” program highlighting songs from throughout their songbook.

Flanked by multi-instrumentalist Phil Cook and guitarist Josh Kaufman, Taylor & Co. opened with “Biloxi” from 2016’s Heart Like A Levee. From there, Hiss Golden Messenger worked their way through selections from five of their studio albums. Highlights from the over two-hour set included takes on “Jenny Of The Roses,” “Mahogany Dread,” “O Little Light,” “Domino” and “Southern Grammar” and a guest spot by saxophonist Stuart Bogie, who sat-in on a pair of songs.

HGM also delivered “Lucia” from 2014’s Lateness Of Dancers that featured a brief jam on the Grateful Dead’s “Franklin’s Tower.” Additionally, Taylor shared a brand new song, “Goddamn, I Need A Teacher.” The singer-songwriter revealed the tune would be featured on his next record expected sometime in 2019.
