The Flaming Lips continue their reign as one of rock’s most unique and unapologetically weird bands. The psych-rock outfit shared a colorful new music video combining their cover of David Bowie and Bing Crosby‘s now legendary duet mashup of “Peace on Earth” and “Little Drummer Boy” on Thursday, just in time for the final week of the Christmas season. The Flaming Lips have never shied away from how they express their unique and slightly weird desire to make music, and their new video is no exception, taking viewers into a technicolor performance setting for their fun holiday mashup cover.
The video was reportedly recorded and filmed at Pink Floor Studios in Oklahoma, which belong to the band’s singer, Wayne Coyne. Coyne also teamed up with George Salisbury to co-direct the psychedelic video, which starts in presenting the band dressed in Ancient Roman outfits and painted green faces before percussionists Nick Ley and Matt Duckworth begin playing the rolling snare line intro to “Little Drummer Boy”. Nearly every member of the band is presented in their own unique outfit, but it’s singer Wayne Coyne who is seen sporting the best combination of purple face paint, an Uncle Sam wig, and a crown which would even make Good King Wenceslas mighty jealous. The band gives a lovely rendition of the first verse to “Little Drummer Boy” before Coyne takes lead vocal duties when transitioning into “Peace On Earth” starting at the video’s 1:09-minute mark.
Coyne clearly sings out the lyrics to the song originally penned by Ian Fraser/Larry Grossman/Alan Kohan while his bandmates continue on with “Little Drummer Boy” verses as the backing lines. The mashup really begins to liven up with a standard rock and roll beat by the time Coyne takes listeners into the bridge, before eventually bringing the songs back down for a quiet and surprisingly subtle end.

The new mashup may even make a live appearance when The Flaming Lips head down to The Caverns in Pelham, Tennessee for their New Year’s Eve concert with Uni in a few weeks. They’re also scheduled to team up with the Colorado Symphony for a show at Denver’s Boettcher Concert Hall early next year on February 22nd, followed by an appearance at Belly Up Aspen the following evening on February 23rd.
