The JamBase Podcast Episode 27: Tom Marshall & Pink Talking Fish

136

Episode 27 of The JamBase Podcast features a chat with the members of Phish/Talking Heads/Pink Floyd tribute act Pink Talking Fish. The interview follows a special edition of “The Rundown” that includes a guest appearance from Phish lyricist Tom Marshall.

All four members of Pink Talking Fish discussed “The Art Of The Setlist” with JamBase’s David Onigman. The chat took place earlier this fall at the Hangtown Music Festival in Placerville, California. Bassist Eric Gould, keyboardist Richard James, drummer Zack Burwick and guitarist Dave Brunyak talked about how they decide what to play at each show. The band explained their approach for a late-night set versus a daytime performance, how they find connections between the music of the three acts they cover, constructing mashups, performing with the Giant Country Horns and more.

DaveO starts off the first episode of our second year with “The Rundown.” Onigman recaps a number of tour and festival announcements from the past few weeks including Dead & Company‘s 2019 tour. He then discusses some of the highlights from last weekend’s Warren Haynes Presents The Christmas Jam and the surprise Pop Up Snow Jam that followed on Sunday night. Dave went on to talk about Trey Anastasio‘s new Ghosts Of The Forest project. He attended Trey’s solo acoustic show in Oakland back on Saturday, where Anastasio started to tell a story about the song “Sleep.” The guitarist cut himself off before telling the tale, so DaveO recruited Tom Marshall to discuss the lyrics to the song. Marshall kind of cleared up the “Sleep” story and also answered a few other questions about similar tunes. Be sure to check out Tom’s Under The Scales podcast on the Osiris Podcast Network.
