Umphrey’s McGee Bust Outs Rush & Wings Covers In Atlanta: Full Show Audio

133

Umphrey’s McGee hit the midway point of their four-show New Year’s Run at the Tabernacle in Atlanta. The prog-jam rockers unearthed long-lost covers from Wings and Rush during their two-set night in the Peach State.

The Chicago-based band opened things up with a seamless run that got going with “Gurgle.” The short and punchy instrumental segued straight into longtime fan-favorite “JaJunk.” The stretch continued with “Upward,” as the it’s you cut worked its way into “2×2.” The old-school selection gave the seven-piece act their first opportunity of the night to stretch things out as they delivered a 20+-minute version of the tune dates all the back to 1998. “Stinko’s Ascension,” which got its 19th ever rendering, gave the band another opportunity to open things up as they dug in on a lengthy jam. Umphrey’s offered their first surprise of the night next reaching for “Band On The Run.” The Wings cover had been sitting on the shelf since February 20, 2011 – a span of 781 shows. “Maybe Someday” brought the opening frame to an end.

The septet went heavy on jams to open up their second stanza dedicating 40+ minutes to “The Floor” and the pairing of “Wappy Spraberry” and “Remind Me.” Umphrey’s reached into their bag of tricks next serving up Rush’s “YYZ.” The Moving Pictures cut had last seen action on May 1, 2015, a 324 show layoff. “Half Delayed,” “Plunger” and an extended “Den” closed out the set. Umphrey’s served up a two-song encore with “The Weight Around” coming ahead of the final portion of “JaJunk.” Listen to full show audio taped by Don Okler below:
