On Saturday night, Umphrey’s McGee returned to Atlanta, GA’s Tabernacle for the second night of their four-night New Year’s run. Four-piece rock-fusion outfit TAUK handled the evening’s opening duties, as the band got the rowdy southern crowd on their feet and grooving.
Umphrey’s McGee came out to open their first set with “Gurgle”, before moving forward with a seamlessly segued “JaJunk” –> “Upward” > “2×2”. The band made it evident they were loose and ready to burn The Tab down, as guitarists Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss traded off smoking hot guitar solos, anchored by Kris Myers precise work behind the drum kit. Next up was “Stinko’s Ascension”, before hopping into a cover of Wings’ “Band On The Run”, played for the first time since February 20th, 2011, a gap of 781 shows! “Maybe Someday” brought Umphrey’s McGee’s first set to a close, off of their recent 2018 release It’s Not Us.
Following a brief setbreak, Umphrey’s came back out to open their second set with “The Floor”, as bassist Ryan Stasik laid down on infectious groove that quickly caught the attention of his bandmates. A roaring rendition of “Wappy Sprayberry” was up next, before the six-piece moved forward with their second It’s Not Us tune of the night, “Remind Me”. A cover of Rush’s “YYZ” made an appearance next for the first time since 2015, before blazing through “Half Delayed” and “Plunger”, finally bringing the second set to a close with “Den”. A one-two combo of “The Weight Around” into “JaJunk” brought the Saturday night rock show to a halt, leaving Umphrey’s fans begging for more as the band walked offstage.
