Umphrey’s McGee Releases Acoustic Live Performance Of Holiday Bowie Parody ‘Santa Oddity’ From 2011 [Listen]

Umphrey’s McGee has given their fans another early holiday present with the Friday’s new release of a seasonally appropriate old performance. Just a few days following the arrival of their concert film, Live From Austin City Limits, the hard-hitting rockers finally released a digital version of guitarists Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss‘ acoustic performance of “Santa Oddity”.

The holiday-themed parody of David Bowie‘s 1969 single, “Space Oddity”, was initially performed and recorded at Jake and Brendan’s Ninth Annual Acoustic Holiday Show back in 2011, and shines as brightly as a reindeer sleigh shooting across the winter nighttime sky even seven years later.

The performance initially took place back on December 10th, 2011, and also includes a brief, holiday-themed spin on Marshall Tucker Band’s “Can’t You See” towards the end. Cinninger reworked the lyrics to “Space Oddity” for the performance, singing out to Santa Claus rather than Major Tom as Bowie does to open the original’s lead verse—and it only gets better from there. Other updated lyrics include “Eat your cookies and put your suit on,” and “Those elves really want to know who’s suit you wear.” Bayliss can be heard chiming in with backing harmonies at the song’s 1:43 mark before his own rework of “Can’t You See” begins shortly after 3:10. The two briefly head back into “Santa Oddity” towards the end, but the performance quickly comes to a close with Cinninger stating “That worked, that was fun.”

The full performance from that night in 2011 at Chicago’s Park West also included covers of INXS‘ “Never Tear Us Apart”, Electric Light Orchestra‘s “Can’t Get It Out of My Head”, and Dire Straits “So Far Away”, just to name a few. The two have continued the annual tradition of their Acoustic Holiday Show, with the 16th edition taking place just last week with notable appearances from Jennifer Hartswick and Umphrey’s bandmate Andy Farag.

“Santa Oddity” was initially offered as a free download included in their Hall Of Fame Class Of 2011 compilation vinyl edition, and can now be purchased as a stand-alone digital single by clicking here.

Umphrey’s McGee is occupied down in Mexico for the rest of this weekend at Holidaze 2018. The rock/jam outfit will then begin preparation for their four-night New Year’s Eve run down in Atlanta beginning on December 28th.
