Warren Haynes & Dave Grohl Lead Pop Up Snow Jam In Asheville

256

Warren Haynes and Dave Grohl had a surprise in store for those in Asheville last night after a major snowstorm. The Gov’t Mule and Foo Fighters frontmen followed the two nights of this year’s Christmas Jam by hosting a Pop Up Snow Jam at Asheville’s Orange Peel on Sunday.

Dave Grohl kicked off the action on drums with Alain Johannes, Chris Chaney, Drew Hester, Greg Kurstin, Jason Falkner and Barrett Jones for their second-ever live performance of Dave’s “Play” instrumental. Haynes then emerged with Grohl on the kit, Hester on percussion, Gov’t Mule’s Danny Louis on keys and Jorgen Carlsson on bass for Led Zeppelin’s “Since I’ve Been Loving You.” Next up was a Haynes-led rendition of “You Don’t Know How It Feels” by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Grohl stayed behind the drums as Warren sang the Nirvana classic “All Apologies.” The pair were helped out on “All Apologies” by Louis, Carlsson, Hester, Kurstin and guitarist T-Bone Anderson.

The concert rolled on with Gov’t Mule’s Matt Abts on drums for a cover of Petty’s “Breakdown” that featured Haynes, Grohl, Johannes, Chaney, Hester, Kurstin, Jones and Louis. A similar lineup that saw guitarist Jimmy Vivino join in closed out the marathon first set with takes on The Beatles’ “Helter Skelter” and “Bitch” by The Rolling Stones. Haynes and Grohl began the second set backed by Danny Louis, Jorgen Carlsson, Drew Hester, Mike Barnes and Greg Kurstin with a version of Temple Of The Dog’s “Hunger Strike” that featured “Dear Mr. Fantasy” by Traffic within. Audley Freed then replaced Barnes for covers of The Who’s “Eminence Front” and Led Zeppelin’s “No Quarter.” Former Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer Artimus Pyle emerged for the encore of “Simple Man.” Artimus was joined by Haynes, Grohl, Louis, Robert Kearns, Marshall Pyle, Freed, Kurstin and saxphonist Ron Holloway for the show-closing number.
