On Saturday night, the Live from Here concert/variety show took over New York City’s Town Hall. The live performance series, hosted by Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers musician and radio personality Chris Thile, featured funk ensemble Vulfpeck, rising indie pop singer Maggie Rogers, I’m With Her mandolinist Sarah Jorosz, progressive bluegrass banjo player Noam Pikelny, and comedian/Broad City actor, Chris Gethard.

During the Vulfpeck portion of the evening, which came one day after the band released their eighth studio album, fans were treated to versions of their signature songs unlike ever before. To celebrate the December weather, vocalist Theo Katzman led the band and fans through an appropriate “Christmas in LA”, even inviting the musical crowd to participate in the friendly lyrics. With the full band (Jack Stratton, Joe Dart, Woody Goss, Cory Wong, Joey Dosik, and Theo) wearing striped shirts, dedicated Vulf fans will appreciate the effort in changing uniform (and consistency of Jack’s incorporation of the color red).

From there, show host Chris Thile joined the squad for an unparalleled version of “Dean Town”. With Thile on mandolin and Cory Wong on acoustic, surrounding Dart on bass and Goss on keys while Stratton, Dosik, and Katzman admirably clapped in the background, this version of the old-school favorite is what keeps fans salivating to attend any and every Vulfpeck performance.

For the finale, Vulfpeck and Chris Thile returned to the stage to perform the live debut of “Darwin Derby” with Maggie Rogers, Monica Martin, and the house band.

Vulfpeck’s guest appearance on Live From Here was truly full circle. During an episode last fall, Chris Thile covered “Fugue State” off Vulf’s 2014 album by the same name, with Richard Dworsky and The First-Call Radio Players (composed of Brittany Haas, fiddle; Chris Eldridge, guitar; Alan Hampton, bass; and Ted Poor, percussion). You can watch that little piece of excellence here.

Live from Here initially developed as a result of A Prairie Home Companion, a program hosted by Garrison Keillor, which aired through public radio starting back in March 1974. Thile ended up taking over the hosting responsibilities beginning in 2016, having been a lifelong fan of the show, which initially ran until its hiatus back in 1987. Live from Here now continues its former tradition of being broadcasted via public radio, in addition to being streamed online and in some cases, YouTube.
