Up until recently, Counting Crows’ title-track from their 1993 debut full-length album, August and Everything After, could only be heard by way of a bootleg recording. While some of the tune’s lyrics are on the album cover, the song never made it onto the early-90’s recording, and also saw little attention in the band’s live repertoire.

In late 2018, Counting Crows dusted off the track for its first studio recording with iconic composer Vince Mendoza and the London Studio Orchestra.

Frontman Adam Duritz explains to Rolling Stone,

It was just me on the piano, which was probably a bad arrangement for it. There were holes in the lyrics and that really weighed it down. The whole thing was just lumbering. We had to toss it.

He continues explaining the tune’s recent revival,

[Mendoza] conceived of this kind of bizarre instrumentation of our band with just bass, drums and pedal steel. Then there’s a 22-piece string section and one woodwind, a big oboe. It all fit together perfectly. We played live and got it in just five or so takes.
