Phish continued a tradition of recruiting David Gallo Design to help pull off their New Year’s Eve gag on December 31, 2018 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The firm and the band teamed up to provide a visual spectacle that included aerialists, dancers and unusual lighting displays to accompany Phish’s performance of “Mercury” that closed out 2018 as well as the versions of “Auld Lang Syne” and “Say It To Me S.A.N.T.O.S.” that started 2019. David Gallo Design shared a gallery of 47 photos that give a behind-the-scenes look at the planning and execution of the gag.

Acrobatic dancers emerged in the middle of the “Mercury” that began Phish’s third set on New Year’s Eve. The dancers pulled off wild moves while twirling through nets as the band sang, “but the net’s unbreakable, don’t worry about falling.” Haze and hanging lights accompanied the dancers towards the end of the “Mercury” jam. A computerized voice counted down the final 30 seconds of the year leading into a massive balloon drop and Phish performing the traditional “Auld Lang Syne.” Guitarist Trey Anastasio and bassist Mike Gordon, who were each wearing space suits were lifted into the air and performed “Say It To Me S.A.N.T.O.S.” with the rest of the rest of their band mates while hanging above the stage. Gallo’s dancers then emerged to help celebrate the start of the new year.
