Dead & Company continues to build momentum ahead of their 2019 summer tour by gradually sharing official audio and video footage from the band’s 2017 fall  and 2018 winter tours. So far, the band has released pro-shot videos of “Deep Elem Blues”,“If I Had The World to Give“, and “Eyes Of The World“. Dead & Company continued their video vault rollout with the release of “Iko Iko”, the band’s show-opening number from their performance on 11/22/2017 at Hartford, CT’s XL Center.

Dead & Co. took their time easing into the first set opener, with Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart setting the tempo on drums. Bob Weir sounded sharp vocally, with John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge, and Jeff Chimenti providing some backing vocal assistance on the chorus. Moving out of “Iko Iko’s” structured segment, Mayer took a short, yet breezy guitar solo, before passing the torch onto Chimenti to steal the show. Chimenti dazzled the New England crowd with a roaring solo on his grand piano, allowing his quick-witted fingers to dance around, before crashing back into Weir’s vocal lead.

SiriusXM’s Gary Lambert also continues to provide thought-provoking liner notes to go with the release of every video and audio performance, as part of the band’s latest fan-friendly initiative. As he notes about this week’s video selection,

Hey Now! Based on the battle chants of the legendary Mardi Gras Indian tribes of New Orleans, this song first appeared in recorded form in 1953 as “Jock-a-Mo,” by James “Sugarboy” Edwards, then resurfaced under its current title as a smash 1965 single by the vocal group the Dixie Cups. It started turning up in the Grateful Dead’s repertoire in the late 70s and its irresistible groove was especially welcome at the Mardi Gras shows (complete with parade floats and wild costumes) that the great impresario Bill Graham produced for the Dead in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 80s and early 90s.
