Greensky Bluegrass Debuts ‘All For Money’ At 2018 New Year’s Eve Show In Chicago: Full Show Audio

146

Greensky Bluegrass ended a four-show New Year’s Run at Chicago’s Riviera Theatre with a marathon New Year’s Eve performance on Monday night. The quintet focused on favorites throughout the night and also debuted the title track from their forthcoming All For Money LP.

The Michigan-birthed band opened with their own “The Four” and “Train Junkie” by Benny “Burle” Galloway. Keith Allison’s “Freeborn Man” then led into “I’d Probably Kill You” complete with its now standard reference to pal Billy Strings. Old standby “Tied Down” was followed by “Fixin’ To Ruin,” a cover of The Wood Brothers’ “Luckiest Man” and All For Money’s “What You Need” to end the opening stanza.

GSBG kicked off the second set with “Reverend” and an expansive “Leap Year” that spanned more than 16 minutes. Next up was Bill Monroe’s “I’m Working On A Building” and the classic “No Idea.” All For Money was again represented by “Courage For The Road” and the debut of the title track, which along with rarity “What Happened To Jim?” closed out the second set.

The five-piece began the third and final set with a cover of The Allman Brothers Band’s “Midnight Rider.” A wild “Kerosene” sequence led into 2019 and the traditional “Auld Lang Syne.” Greensky also fit in “Ain’t No Bread In The Breadbox” complete with their second-ever version of the Dirty Dancing classic “(I’ve Had The) Time Of My Life” before bringing “Kerosene” to a close. The set rolled on with the fun sequence of “For Sure Uh Huh” and “Who Is Fredrico?” Greensky ended the set with “White House Blues” and “Past My Prime” as well as a version of their own “Tarpology” containing a cover of Van Morrison’s “Into The Mystic” within. The fitting “Drink Up & Go Home” and five takes on the “Broke Mountain Breakdown Reprise” brought the night to a close. Listen to an audience recording by Todd Moore:
