Happy Birthday Donald Fagen: Steely Dan Live In Detroit 2000

372

Steely Dan co-founder Donald Fagen was born on this date in 1948. The Passaic, New Jersey native went on to form Steely Dan with Walter Becker a few years after the pair met at Bard College in 1967. Steely Dan embarked on a career worthy of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame as they mixed jazz, rock and R&B in a way no other act had before.

While Steely Dan stopped performing live after 1974 until they broke up in 1981, Becker and Fagen reformed the band in 1993 and toured a number of times since. Donald Fagen has continued to perform with the Steely Dan band following Walter’s death in 2017. A professionally-shot show from June 25, 2000 at Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan gives a look at Steely Dan at their best.

The Dan performed 23 songs from throughout their career during the Two Against Nature tour stop near Detroit. 1972’s Can’t Buy A Thrill is represented by “Dirty Work,” while “Bodhisattva,” “My Old School” and “Boston Rag” were performed from 1973’s Countdown To Ecstasy. Steely Dan also treated Michigan fans to “Monkey In Your Soul” and “Night By Night” off 1974’s Pretzel Logic as well as “Bad Sneakers,” “Black Friday” and “Daddy Don’t Live In That New York City No More” from the 1975 LP Katy Lied. The band played the title track from 1976’s The Royal Scam in addition to “Don’t Take Me Alive” and “Kid Charlemagne.” Steely Dan released the iconic Aja album in 1977. The show at Pine Knob featured “Josie,” “Deacon Blues” and “Peg” from the record.

Steely Dan was touring in support of Two Against Nature at the time of the Clarkston performance. “Cousin Dupree,” “Jack Of Speed,” “Janie Runaway” and “West Of Hollywood” made the setlist from what still stands as the penultimate Steely Dan studio album.
