Margo Price played an early afternoon set on the first day of the 2018 edition of the Newport Folk Festival. The Nashville-based musician delivered an instant-classic on the main stage that featured an unexpected duet with John Prine and an appearance from Brandi Carlile on a Dolly Parton song. NPR Music shared an official recording of her set from July 27, 2018.
Price’s performance got off to a memorable start before she played a song as Prine, who wasn’t on last year’s bill, introduced the rising country star. Price then delivered a nearly hour-long country-soul revue that featured selections from her two studio albums. Early highlights included the psychedelic country rocker “Do Right By Me” and a jammed-out version of “Cocaine Cowboys” that featured Price getting beyond the drum kit as they stretched out the tut.
Prine emerged midway through the set as the legendary singer-songwriter teamed with Price on his quirky, yet endearing love song “In Spite Of Ourselves.” Two songs later Price welcomed her second guest as Carlile took to the stage for a singalong take on Dolly Parton’s empowering ode to working women “9 To 5.” Stream Margo Price’s set from the 2018 Newport Folk Festival via NPR Music below:
